It was a beautiful day for club rugby. We have been spoilt with world class rugby on television and at Cape Town Stadium, but there is something special about a packed Brookside. The stands were full, with many familiar faces and just as many young supporters. Thank you to everyone who came. Your support made a difference.
The conditions were perfect, but there was nothing easy about what unfolded. It was 80 minutes of relentless, physical rugby between two proud clubs that refused to give an inch.
There was a sense of history repeating itself. Last year, away to DurBell, Villager FC lost in the dying seconds. This Saturday, it was Villager who found themselves under the same pressure. With just three minutes remaining, DurBell were awarded a penalty try to edge ahead by a single point.
The restart became the defining moment. There was urgency, but no panic. The kick off had to be retaken, giving Villager one more chance. From the restart, the home side earned a penalty. It was no easy kick and there were no guarantees. Aydon Topley as always seemed relaxed, confident and composed under the immense pressure, the ball sailed through the posts. Moments later, the final whistle sounded. Villager FC had won by two points.
These are the matches that remind us why club rugby remains so special. They are built on courage, commitment and respect. Every tackle matters. Every contest is earned. DurBell pushed Villager to the absolute limit and showed exactly why they are one of the competition’s leading clubs.
To everyone at DurBell, thank you. We have enormous respect for your club, your players and the contest you brought to Brookside. It was rugby played with intensity, skill and grit. It was a fitting advertisement for club rugby and a match that everyone fortunate enough to be there will remember.
