This Women’s Month, Villager FC celebrates Lukishia Snyders and every woman who continues to break barriers, challenge expectations and create pathways for those coming behind her.
1. Tell us about yourself and how you first fell in love with rugby.
My name is Lukishia Snyders, and rugby found a place in my heart at a young age. The sport taught me courage, family, and resilience, and from the moment I stepped onto the field, I knew it was where I belonged.
2. What inspired you to start playing a sport that has traditionally been male-dominated?
I wanted to prove that passion has no gender. I believed that if I worked hard and stayed true to myself, I could inspire other girls to chase their dreams without fear.
3. What has your rugby journey been like so far?
It has been filled with challenges, growth, and unforgettable memories. Every setback has made me stronger, and every opportunity has reminded me why I love this game.
4. What has been your biggest achievement on the rugby field?
Being selected to represent South Africa has been one of my proudest moments. It showed me that dedication and perseverance truly pay off.
5. What challenges have you faced as a female rugby player, and how have you overcome them?
I’ve faced doubt, injuries, and people who underestimated women’s rugby. I overcame them by believing in myself, working hard, and never giving up on my dream.
6. How has rugby shaped you as a person away from the field?
Rugby has taught me discipline, respect, leadership, and compassion. It has helped me become someone who never stops learning and always lifts others up.
7. What does being part of the Villager Rugby family mean to you?
Villager is more than a club—it’s a family. It’s a place where I feel supported, valued, and encouraged to become the best version of myself.
8. How important is it for young girls to have female rugby role models?
It means everything. When girls see women achieving their dreams, they begin to believe that they can achieve theirs too.
9. Where would you like to see women’s rugby in South Africa five years from now?
I hope to see it growing in every community, with more opportunities, greater support, and full recognition for the incredible talent our women have.
10. During Women’s Awareness Month, what message would you like to leave for every young girl who dreams of pulling on a rugby jersey?
Never let anyone tell you that you can’t. Dream boldly, work hard, and wear your jersey with pride. Your journey may inspire another little girl to believe in herself too.
