Since its establishment in 1990, Sporting Chance has grown to become a leading sports coaching and development organisation in South Africa with a powerful and recognizable brand. With the belief that sport speaks a universal language, which breaks down barriers and cuts through income and ethnic divides, Sporting Chance uses the power of sport to positively change young lives. It is during the formative years that the foundation for a physically active lifestyle is laid and Sporting Chance has advocated and implemented various programmes for coaching school-age children. With disciplined, structured coaching that strikes a balance between skills and “play”, Sporting Chance has developed some of South Africa’s most promising sportspeople.
Sporting Chance offers professional coaching and structured sports programmes at schools, clubs, holiday clinics and birthday parties through their coaching services department that serves the affluent market. In addition, the Sporting Chance Development Foundation provides opportunities for children from impoverished communities to play sport in a safe and structured environment while simultaneously receiving life skills education. This is done through a year-round, national schedule of community programmes, such as Street Sports, Calypso Cricket, Holiday Coaching Clinics and the Disney Healthy Happy Play program.
Sporting Chance and Villager RFC are teaming up to relaunch the youth section at the club. The Villager Vikings will be a community based, outcome specific rugby skills programme with sessions taking place on a Friday evening from 16h00 – 17h30 for boys and girls aged 6 – 13 years. Launching in April 2023 at the home of Villager RFC, Brookside, the young players will get to run in the footsteps of some of the club’s legends and current senior players.
In 2 Touch Touch Rugby leagues have been running on Wednesday nights at the Villager Football Club since 2002. 6-Down Touch was initially seen and used as an off season fitness alternative, but over the years the sport has grown in its own right and is played throughout the year by both Rugby players and non-traditional players. In its hay-days around 2005-2007, people from all over Cape Town came down on Wednesday nights to enjoy both the Touch Rugby and the great time available in the old clubhouse overlooking the Main field. Today the league is very much in a re-building phase and together with the club hierarchy, we are working hard to bring back the glory days at the club!
Games happen on Wednesday evenings between 18:00 and 22:00 and leagues are structured to accommodate all levels of players, both men and women, corporate, social and provincial level.
